Health Insurance Modernization and Affordability Act
It's puzzling that there is so little info about it on the Net. In fact, I was surprised because this looks like it's an important piece of legislation. This was all I could find:
Supports:

Opposes:

The supporters say it will take a large burden off of small businesses and allow them to access insurance risk pools OUTSIDE OF THEIR STATE. When I lived in Texas, I worked for a risk pool that supplied insurance for Texas municipal employees at a lower price than if they got standard group coverage. So I can see why small business owners want this.
The opposers say it's a special interest giveway for insurance companies. It would allow the companies to create "swiss cheese" insurance plans. In other words, the floodgates would be open to plans that have all kinds of exclusions that are currently not allowed. Basically, if you are young and/or healthy, there will be plans that cover very little but cost less. That means those that want REAL coverage will have to pay much higher premiums. The original idea of insurance is to put EVERYONE in a pool to spread the risk around.
On the other hand, I was recently shopping for my own insurance policy. They had plans that included and excluded maternity. I was delighted that I could go with a lower cost plan, since I certainly don't need maternity coverage.
But what if, a few years from now, I'm shopping for a plan that excludes not only maternity coverage, but cancer, diabetes or heart disease coverage. Then it gets mighty tricky.
Obviously, the clear solution is a national health care system, but as long as politics remains marinated in special interest money, that will never happen.
